Early Inspiration

Sam Luther credits Sesame Street for igniting his passion for painting. Episodes featuring The Mad Painter, who roamed the streets delightfully painting numbers in unexpected places, sparked a lifelong fascination with creating art. Watch a clip here to experience a bit of that magic.

This obsession led him to pursue art at The Art Institute of Philadelphia in the 1990s, aspiring to be an illustrator. However, reality redirected him toward graphic design, a shift that set the foundation for his career.

Career Journey

After graduating, Sam launched a graphic design business that evolved into Three60, specializing in web application development. For years, painting took a backseat until 2005, when the birth of his daughter inspired him to return to the easel. “I didn’t want her to grow up thinking my only skill was staring at a screen, cursing,” he recalls.

Artistic Style

Sam’s work spans landscapes, interiors, still life, and portraits. His primary medium is oil, employing an alla prima technique, a method where paintings are completed in one session while the paint is still wet. (Alla prima means “at first attempt” in Italian.)

Recently, Sam has experimented with indirect painting using acrylic and Flashe vinyl paint, which allows for quick layering and glazing.

Influences

“I enjoy almost all forms and styles of painting,” Sam shares, “and I’m easily influenced by just about every artist I come across. This is a problem, and I’m working on it.” His adaptable nature enriches his work, reflecting a dynamic interplay of styles and techniques.
